Like today’s zebras, quaggas lived in groups called harems, which consisted of a single stallion and a group of up to 15 mares. To have his own harem, an adult stallion had to abduct young mares from other harems. Only when the mare was pregnant did the bachelor get to keep her in his harem. Mares had one foal every two years.
Not all quaggas lived in the wild. They were used as exotic harness animals in London during the 1830s and many were domesticated by the Khoikhoi, a tribe living in southern Africa. This was not easy as quaggas were highly-strung and prone to fits of rage.
